SS8H9: World War II

As with WWI, the US wanted to stay isolated in this war, but still wanted to help their allies without fighting. This led the US to create a Lend-Lease system, where we lent Great Britain war supplies. This, however, did not last long, and on December 7, 1941, Japanese forces attacked our Navy at Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii.

Carl Vinson, a resident of Baldwin County, Georgia, was a member of the House of Representatives, and helped expand our nation's navy heavily. For this, he was nicknamed "the Father of the Two Ocean Navy".

Georgia helped with the war effort in multiple ways. One of the ways was Bell Aircraft, which made B-29 Bombers. This plant later became Lockheed Martin. Other Georgia war efforts were the shipyards at Savannah and Brunswick building of Liberty Ships, and Forts to train soldiers such as Fort Benning and Robbins Air Field.

An important but saddening event was the Holocaust. The Holocaust was Hitler and Nazi Germany's plan to exterminate all Jews and others not believed to be a part of the "Aryan Race", which was viewed by Adolf as "flawless and superior" to other races. This genocide of six million Jews led to Americans becoming more sympathetic towards blacks suffering by segregation and Jews suffering by anti-Semitism.

Throughout his life, FDR visited Warm Springs, Georgia 41 times. These visits helped the late President understand the troubles that the people in the South were having, and from this, he created the New Deal.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Fun Facts:

FDR passed in Warm Springs shortly after a painter started a portrait of him. In his honor, the painting is left unfinished.

Carl Vinson served in the House of Representatives for 50 years and one month.
